Alle 32 Klaviersonaten Beethovens hat sich Stephen Kovacevich vorgenommen aufzunehmen, wie einst Alfred Brendel, Friedrich Gulda und Arthur Schnabel. Sein Marathonlauf erreicht nun die siebte Etappe; auf seinem Programm finden sich diesmal die Sonaten op.26, op.27/1 und 2, die berühmte "Mondscheinsonate" in cis-Moll, und die beiden Sonaten op.49.

Man ist besonders gespannt auf Kovacevichs Interpretation des Ohrwurms Mondscheinsonate, hat man sie doch in allen Versionen schon gehört. Die Mondscheinsonate ist Musik von großer Leidenschaft. Nie zuvor hatten sich Beethovens Gefühle derart offen und gewaltvoll in einem Werk entladen: Der Meister hatte sich in seine Klavierschülerin, die junge bildhübsche Gräfin Giulietta Guicciardi verliebt. Ergebnis dieser wenn auch einseitigen Leidenschaft war diese Sonate. Später schien es, als geniere sich Beethoven dafür, seine Seele so offen gelegt zu haben, denn er beklagte: "Immer spricht man von der cis-Moll Sonate, ich habe doch wahrhaftig Besseres geschrieben."

Leider erliegt auch Kovacevich dem "Mondschein-Klischee", dem zufolge der langsame erste Satz Adagio wattig und süßlich erklingen möge. Viele glauben diesen Satz gleich vom Blatt spielen zu können, aber sie irren, denn der Satz ist äußerst vielschichtig. Da ist die zarte, traurig singende Melodie, da die fahlen Triolen der Begleitung, da die wie in Marmor gemeißelten Schritte des Basses. Dies alles lupenrein zu differenzieren verlangt hohe Interpretationskunst und innere künstlerische Freiheit. Ganz in seinem Element ist Kovacevich im letzten Satz der Sonate. Den geht er mit dem gewohnten Beethoven'schen Ingrimm und technischer Meisterschaft ab. Weiterhin auf der Aufnahme finden sich die Sonaten Nr.26 und Nr.49. Innigkeit und Innerlichkeit scheinen nicht Kovacevichs Sache zu sein -- gedankenlos und ohne Punkt und Komma zu setzen rast er durch die Sonate Nr.49, so als wolle er sein Pensum schnell zum Abschluss bringen. --Teresa Pieschacón Raphael
